Temperature refers to the physical quantity of heat or cold in an area or object, serving as a manifestation of thermal energy. Depending upon the application, various units may be used to express temperature, common ones being Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin, etc. When one wishes to determine the temperature of a given object or area, there are also numerous tools which one may rely on to receive accurate results. Thermometers are a common device that measures temperature on a gradient, and they may come in a number of types to accommodate varying needs. With the pyrometer in particular, users may quickly measure the temperature of distant objects. As a tool that is regularly used in many industries and operations, having an understanding of the pyrometer and its functionality can be very useful.
In its most basic form, a pyrometer is a variation of remote-sensing infrared or radiation thermometers that is capable of detecting the temperature of an object’s surface from a distance. In order to do this, the tool relies on radiation that is emitted from the object itself, whether infrared or invisible. As their method of operations depend upon the absorption of energy and the measurement of EM wave intensities, the pyrometer is comparable to a photodetector.
Pyrometers may be procured in various spectral ranges, and depending on their range may be further classified into 1-color, 2-color, and high-speed pyrometers. In order to detect the emitted radiation sourcing from the surface of an object, pyrometers will utilize an optical system and detector as their basic components. With the optical sensor, emitted radiation from an object is detected through the capturing of energy, and this emission is then relayed to the detector. As a component that is sensitive to radiation waves, the detector will create an output that refers to the object’s temperature level based on captured radiation. As emitted radiation will often come in the form of an infrared wave that belongs to the electromagnetic spectrum, the detector ensures that the energy is transformed into an electrical signal that may be processed.
As previously mentioned, there are various types of pyrometers, though the two primary variations are the optical and infrared/radiation pyrometers. Optical pyrometers in particular are a type that is capable of detecting thermal radiation that is on the visible spectrum. As such, they rely on the visible light emitted from hot objects. In order to make their measurements, optical pyrometers compare a calibrated light source to the surface of the measured object. If the filament and surface both have a matching temperature value, the radiation will become invisible and a temperature level reading is achieved.
Infrared pyrometers, on the other hand, utilize thermal radiation that is within the infrared region. When detecting such values, the distance will often range from 2-14um. In order to create an electrical signal that is readable, the infrared pyrometer will capture radiation and utilize a thermocouple in order to convert the energy. For the construction of such equipment pieces, infrared pyrometers take advantage of various pyroelectric materials such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), triglycine sulfate (TGS), and lithium tantalate (LiTaO3).
Pyrometers may be useful for a number of applications, regularly being found within metallurgy and smelting industries. They also may be used to safely and easily measure the temperatures of hot air balloons, steam boilers, furnaces, heated metals, moving objects, and much more. While pyrometer equipment may present rapid response times, measurements at a distance, and optimal stability, they can regularly be an expensive device that is affected by various conditions such as present dust, smoke, or thermal radiation from other objects.
