Wireless Chargeable Drone Technology Released
In recent news Scientist, have begun to create a drone that requires no cord for rechargeability but a magnetic source. This drone will be able to be charged while in the air and no need for it to be lowered at any time allowing it to be in air for longer periods of time. Its means of recharging would be to solely fly over a support vehicle that would dish out magnetic waves.
This process in technology that will allow for the drone to be charged with out lowering is called inductive coupling. First introduced by Nikola Tesla dating back to over a century ago.
The inductive coupling is performed by pairing copper coils that are initially tuned into coil electronically allowing for the transferring of power at a certain frequency.
The Imperial College, London had a demonstration using a standard mini drone. The Engineers removed and replaced the drone’s battery and “altered its electronics and made a copper foil ring to act as a receiving antenna encircling the drone's casing.”
After doing so the engineers created a device on ground that would transmit the power from a circuit board object resulting in a magnetic field.
Both the drone and the magnetic field were programmed at the same frequency when the drone was flown over the circuit board.
Although the charging could only be at a distance of 10cm the engineers from the Imperial College stated that this is something that they can work on and have the drone be commercialized at as little as a year.
Drones have extremely expanded within the years and have been used for actions “for surveillance, reconnaissance missions and search-and-rescue operations.” The team of engineers have planned on a goal to keep the drone airborne for a longer period which will allow eliminate humans from having to recharge them at such difficult areas. Paul Mitcheson, a professor in the Department of electrical l and electronic engineering at the imperial College stated ,” "Imagine using a drone to wirelessly transmit power to sensors on things such as bridges to monitor their structural integrity.”
