A National Stock Number is the numeric code given to any product or item that the government buys or uses. Within this National Stock Number, or NSN, are groups of numbers classifying what category the part falls under and what it is used for. The first group of numbers is called the Federal Supply Group, or FSG. Assigning an item an FSG means it falls under the same classification of all parts within that group. For example, Federal Supply Group 34 is for all Metalworking Machinery. When the government buys metalworking machinery it is assigned to FSG 34, making the first two numbers of its NSN 34.
