U.S. Department is Flight Testing at Pendleton UAS Range
Flight testing is very necessary in any aircraft production program, there are prototype airplanes that are designed specifically for flight testing to ensure everything on the aircraft is functioning and responding properly. For example, testing how much weight an airplane can take on board is a very important because most importantly people want to transport goods with them when traveling and knowing how much is safe is very important. Also maximum speed is another test that needs to be conducted to ensure that the airplane can reach its maximum speed without any risks.
Flight testing is one thing when you have a pilot on board but it is definitely different when you are operating a remotely piloted aircraft. The U.S. Department has decided to run a flight testing program at Pendleton Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The purpose of this aircraft is going to be to take atmospheric data in the Arctic regions and this requires a lot of skill and good technology.
The flight testing was expected to run daily until March 17 and this is to get it ready for the year 2018 when the research is schedule to begin. The ArcticShark UAS is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) which is a climate research facility. The ArcticShark UAS is designed to fly almost 15,000 ft in order to get a fair data images of the region being studied and it can go up to a speed of 75 miles/hour.
